How much does it cost to fix a main water line?

On average, it costs $912 to repair your home’s primary water service line. You’ll typically spend between $334 and $1,491. For the most part, water line repairs will cost you between $70 and $120 per hour plus supplies.

However, it depends on the condition of your water line. If it’s deteriorated, you may need to replace it entirely or use a combination of new pipe and patching up old pipes.

It also depends on whether or not we have to dig up concrete.

How do you fix underground water pipes?

The first step is to shut off the water. If you have a shut off valve, turn the manual valves until they’re all in the “off” position.

Next, attach a hose to where your home’s main water line enters from outside and drain out whatever water remains inside.

Get a backhoe or excavator ready and locate where the damaged water line is. Usually, you can do this by smell and sight, but if need be, consult a professional who will use electronic locators and gas and vapor detectors that lead them to the exact spot of the break or leaks.

After that, dig up the ground around where the problem happens and reach in to grab whatever’s causing the problem. Be careful of any power lines or other things that could be dangerous! Make sure to remove the entire affected section of pipe, which is usually about 2 feet long.

Before putting all that dirt back in place, lay down several inches of gravel, and then a sleeve to protect the pipe. Finally back-fill the area you dug out with dirt and pack it down firmly.
